An extensive investment program for the prospective development of the coastal community of Cocodrilo is making significant progress, the highest authorities of the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud confirmed on site.
This enclave – some one hundred kilometers (km) from the main city – is included among the 35 localities in vulnerable conditions identified by the local government, where members of the Leoncio Vidal Contingent from the province of Villa Clara undertake the repair of 50 km of road, the largest work.
Evelio Lavadie, constituency delegate, said that from October to date, eight km of compacted road connecting Cayo Piedra with that site were built, one of the first works carried out by the Revolution, to reach that point where –before January of 1959 – it was only possible to access by sea.
The finishing process of the first road maintenance includes asphalt irrigation by inverted penetration (gravel with ink), which will strengthen that structure, exposed for decades to logical deterioration, he pointed out.
He added that once the two remaining kilometers from last year are completed, the other ten corresponding to the current one will be completed.
As of today, a brigade of non-state workers undertakes the execution of the plan for 24 dwellings, of which progress is being made in the construction of eight of the traditional type, which according to the project will consist of two rooms and the third progressive (so that their inhabitant completes it), portal, living room, kitchen-dining room and terrace, he said.
He specified that this Saturday the constructive actions of the social circle will begin, one of the most heartfelt demands of the population, whose resources are in situ.
We are also going to work on the recovery of the community radio station, a short-range station, serving the information needs of the 346 inhabitants, he informed.
He commented that the start-up of the desalination plant is estimated for next May, aimed at improving the physical-chemical parameters of water for human consumption, a donation from a Japanese non-governmental organization, equipment that is protected in the place of site.
In the South of Isla de la Juventud –Ramsar Site, because it has a wetland of international importance– it is the geographic location of Cocodrilo, whose homes have telephone service and a rural community, where the migration to digital television was tested in Cuba on June 15, 2015.
Lavadie thanked the electorate for the possibility of exchanging with the authorities at the end of each investment review, which will provide superior benefits to this agricultural and fishing enclave, where, with the promotion of the use of renewable energy sources, conditions are created for the development of sustainable tourism.
